Hi, Im just having new spindles and newel posts fitted. I have gone for pine, with oak hand rail and base rail. I was thinking of painting the spindles and newels white and leaving the hand rail oak. Can anyone give advice on how is best to paint them to avoid the dreaded drips!!! Or, can anyone suggest a way to varnish them to a darker colour?? Thanks

find a ngr stain(non grain raising)i think medium pine is the closest u will get to oak test a peice first(lrt it dry) then coat up with a water based varish its easier to clean rub down before recoating and coat again.....its easier to do before installing hope this helps
