I have 3 newel posts which are finished in a red cedar type colour.

I have new oak hand and base rails complete with spindles.

I am not changing the newels. So i have two options.

1) Try to bleach the 3 newel posts

2) Accept that i can't get a fair enough match and have to end up getting them white glossed and matching the inner face of the stringers.

Any advice?

sand off the stain and see what the natural wood colour is.

I would then look at spirit-based wood dyes such as Colron (not the water one), Rustins, Liberon or Wilko.

You can mix them to get various shades and tints. You might want to dye all the woods to bring them to a similar colour.

Then protect with a clear uncoloured matt varnish.
