Ihave a problem with myCumbria mk 2 stair lift not charging .Any help out there ???????

Did have a problem with a Stener not charging started by not being parked correctly but once battery became flat then it failed to charge even if wound onto correct location.

Lucky as council owned so they sorted and this was simply by changing the batteries.

I think the charging circuit is a typical 3 stage charger and what these do is to start with it gets max charge until voltage around 14.7 (12v battery) then it switches to voltage controlled but monitors current as the current drops to a pre-set level which with the small batteries of a lift will be around 1A it will then switch to float at around 13.2v.

Once the battery has been flat for a extended time then it will miss the first two stages and in third stage will take a very long time to charge and likely never fully charge.

You could try removing and charging using a standard battery charger and watch the temperature. When electrical energy is converted into chemical energy during charge then very little heat but once charged it's turned into heat instead (this is how I know when little AA cells are charged) with the sealed lead acid it may go for days taking very little charge then it will go mad and over heat. So use a low charge rate and monitor daily.

You may need new batteries but I would use a volt meter not ammeter to see if charging float charge around 13.2 off charge around 12.4v

My mothers chair charges at the top, on the bend and at bottom although at the bottom can never be used as section lifts up when not in use. There are little copper contacts at all three positions.

What happened was the chair was stopped just short of the top and although a little beeper went off it could not be heard at bottom of stairs.

The chair is operated either from the chair or either of two radio control push buttons at top and bottom of stairs. I had though since fixed they were hard wired but no they used PP3 9v batteries.

The chair between stations is battery operated even the lift up leg is battery operated so even with a power cut chair works as normal.

THANKS FOR YOUR PROMPT REPLY ERIC.I think that my Cumbria mk 2 may be a different type of charging system as I cannot detect any contact points for charging .Regards westy :
