How do I support a trimmer(3.6m) beside a stairwell opening? There are double joists at either end and Building Control tables show that 2.4m is the max permitted span for trimmed joists of 2m - 3m. Will one stud fixed centrally below the trimmer do? How should it be fixed a) to the joist b) to the garage ( concrete) floor?

What considerations are there for siting the trimmer adjacent to the newel since that will effectively (in this case) restrict the nailing of the joist hanger to the top and right face of the joist hanger?

Anybody help?

sometimes trimmers can gain support from the top newel, with said newel going all the way to the floor.

Thanks noseall, unfortunately the newel is only 0.8m from the trimmer joist leaving a gap of 2.8m to be supported.
