Our current waste pipe for the washing machine/dishwasher exits through the kitchen wall at about half distance from the floor to the worktop, meaning that the standpipe itself is only about 12" long.

Is it the length of the standpipe itself thats important or just the distance between the floor and the point where the m/c waste pipe empties thats important? Our washing machine waste pipe goes to the top of the underside of the worktop but drains into only a 12" long standpipe - is this ok?
