Looking at opening up a fairly large span in the back of a solid stone cottage. The walls are 900mm thick....

Would a padstone just be put on top of the existing stone, or would a new pier have to be built?

Its a full length 8m or so. Can pop up a couple of drawings of the plan.

Involve a structural engineer. Random stone does not distribute load in the same way as masonry

I am trying to find one local, but not having much luck just now :) Joy of Scotland, the roof is coming off so thought good time to get steel in.

That was the house, but for the bothie we are adding a room above, with a dorma roof, so more load than the roof on the house.
