You need to prevent corrosion and need to fireproof structural steels. In a domestic situation this is normally done with red oxide and use of cladding or intumescent paint paint for fireproofing. If a BCO is involved find out what they would like. I don't think you'll find any BCO'S who would want a steel left bare.
A tin of oxide is cheap enough, wear gloves when you paint though.
