Do steel lintels need to be painted even though they are interior and will covered in plasterboard or can they be bare

in my extension it had a red rusty look and was simply plasterboarded over

AFAIK they still have to be painted to prevent rusting.

Red oxide paint is the norm.

You need to prevent corrosion and need to fireproof structural steels. In a domestic situation this is normally done with red oxide and use of cladding or intumescent paint paint for fireproofing. If a BCO is involved find out what they would like. I don't think you'll find any BCO'S who would want a steel left bare.

A tin of oxide is cheap enough, wear gloves when you paint though.

I don't know any manufacturer that supplies steel lintels in bare steel. They all come either epoxy coated or galvanised.

BTW, red oxide is not a coating to prevent corrosion. It is a primer only, and rust will get through it if not subsequently painted
