This is not my living room, but i have a question about the centre chimney area. I was looking to have a DVD shelf fitted under the TV and found that when the DIY began to drill, he came against what he describes a steel or metal plating. I live in a maisonette style flat. Is it dangerous to drill through? does it link to a gas flu to the chimney. It is a council property

Without a picture of the actual chimney who can say?

If the TV is fitted on a bracket, perhaps make use of the bracket to support a shelf?

DVD's are a bit "old hat" so I wouldn't invest a massive amount of effort to accommodate them
(I have a massive array of CD's and a few DVD's myself)
Personally I wouldn't add DVDs under a TV as it would draw the eye

Kinda like this ..The wall has a steel or metal plating behind it ..i think it maybe it connects to an old chimney ..not sure. I want to know how it can be fitted

Without knowing for sure what the metal is, don’t drill into it. To find out you’re looking at removing some plaster to have a look. Could be there for a reason eg. I’ve known metal plates to protect gas pipes etc from being drilled into. How much do you trust grab adhesive, that’s your easy route

What I am assuming is that you have a bracket already fitted to the chimney breast? In order to mount the TV?
Most TV brackets are over engineered as TVs seem to get lighter every year.
So what I was suggesting was using the TV bracket to support hangers for the shelf.
Even a sheet of mdf painted the same colour as the wall would blend in.
You don't make it clear if there is a mantelpiece

Photo of what you have would help.

I am seriously losing the plot:censored:. I do not have a bracket already fitted to the chimney breast..There is no mantelpiece , it is just a chimney breast wall without the fireplace:(

You can buy small metal detectors, not much bigger than your hand. One of those will enable you to trace the extent of the metal without damaging the plaster work. The extent of the metal work in the wall will give the members of this forum a good idea of the reason for the metal.

Ok good shout about the metal detector thing. Or seriously if you’re not hanging something heavy, grab adhesive.

I was going to but even Gorilla Glue or Hard as nails do the job:censored:
