Steering noise

Hi guys, i'm hoping one of you can shed some light on this. My wifes Mk IV golf makes a noise which I can only describe as almost like a drum but with a twang, which happens when turning the steering to full lock at low speed or when still.

Any ideas and a general consensus on how easy it would be to repair would be gratefully received.

Possible CV joint ? has the protective rubber boot/gater split ?

strut top mount bearings. common as muck on this car. not too expensive a repair. bout 30 quid for the bits iirc. half hours labour per side.

Failing that check the subframe and wishbone rear bolts are tight
