I wanted to get a fair whack of 2.5mm2 and 1.5mm2 twin and earth today, hopefully in the red and black.

Homebase did not have any. Wickes did not have any. B&Q didn't have any. Screwfix don't seem to have any 2.5.

I wonder why this is?

Harmonised colours are now used. I not sure if the red/black is still produced or if outlets are allowed to sell. An easy way for the building inspector to tell if you are flaunting part p.

How can the inspector tell if you are flaunting PP?

It is most likely that they have just run out of stocks. There is certainly no ban on the sale of the old-style cable.

1. The IEE amendments state that use of the old colors is still acceptable until 2006.

2. As most people are aware, BS7671 has no legal force anyway (as far as domestic work is concerned).

3. Even if it did, there is still no law to ban the sale of old cable.
