Just outside the house sweeping up, and i wondered how hard it is to gain access to the main stopcock, it my case it was realativley easy, quick few scrapes to get the dirt out from around the lid, and it was soon open.

why not check yours soon, before you have to do it

once lived in a flat and needed to access mine once to do some work, took me 30 mins to find it as it was tarmaced over :!:  luckily it wasnt an emergency

Mine is outfront of the houseon the pavement altered the kitchen lay out 5 years ago it was very hard to turn, thing is if you bust it who is responsible for repairs because it not on your property

easy to get at (iron trap in front of garage) but it has a square shaft on it, I had to buy a long key with a T-handle, cost me about £15.

Surely you could have borrowed one off a plumber? Or taped a short one to a piece of wood 8)

We needed a new main stopcock in the house a couple of years ago. Tried to turn the tap outside but its seized up. So the new tap was put inline with the old one in the house. (the old one only just turns)

Would Yorkshire Water repair the tap in the street FOC? Is it their property? Would they have to isolate the street? (Last year they relined the mains and dug holes at every street corner to turn the water off)

I doubt they'd be happy if we break/damage their property ! Or over oiled it !
I painted some 'Waxoyl' around the spigot on the main cock it turns like silk.. 14 yrs so far...

Free leak repair service
We can help you to reduce leaks in your service pipe. We will detect and repair or replace, free of charge, a leaking service pipe to an individual domestic property - up to the outside wall of the house - providing it is accessible and does not pass under any structure. There is no limit to the number of repairs we will carry out. We reserve the right, where appropriate, to replace the pipe rather than repair it. Where work is carried out by us, full reinstatement will be made of the area directly affected by the repair.

392 holes for 6 months !! I should think so too.

I put my extra stopcock inside the porch although I can get to the one outside

about three weeks before we are due to turn up on site, i give my customers a courtesy call, asking amongst other things, whether or not their water main stop cock is serviceable. this is so that we can isolate the water should i go through the supply with the digger.

three weeks should give enough time for any repairs should the tap be 'frozen'...........probably.

i applied this rule at my own extension little knowing i had two stop cocks.
one was frozen open, so severn trent put a new one a little further up the footpath. i of course, tried to shut down the original one, and after a lot of vein bulging maneuvers, ended up with a pi$$ing stopcock.

i informed s.t. straight away but embarrassingly they didn't show for four weeks, with water constantly flowing down the road all that time.

people kept on staring and tutting and shaking their heads and saying "him a builder and letting that thing leak" blah, blah.
'you'd think he'd tell someone wouldn't you'

f.f.s.

Just to confuse things, I'm led to believe that some stopcocks are made with left-hand threads on the spindle.

Just something that may be worth bearing in mind before you wring the neck off the thing when you are trying to shut it.

Never open fully, leave part of a rotation, then with left (if they actually exist in stop taps) or righthand thread you have that small amount of leeway... twixt apparently seized and actually against an 'end stop', (more likely both) !!
Get to know your valves before you NEED them...
