I need to replace this stopcock as its locked solid and tried all the usual stuff to get it to turn.. I suspect it gas not moved for decades.. Managed to work out how to turn it off in the road...

Can somebody explain to me how this has been connected at the bottom between the blue pipe and the stopcock as I've never seen anything like this before and don't want to remove it until I know what I need to replace what's there.. Thanks

Looks to me like 20mm poly to 1/2" F adaptor into which someone has screwed a 15mm compression ended stopcock having discarded the bottom nut and olive.

Unorthodox, but sometimes you gotta do what you can with what you've got.

I'm glad to see the hint of a wisp of hemp, always pragmatic when making a screwed joint out of two parallel threads.

You need a 15mm copper outlet. Have you got enough slack to make up for the length you lose removing the adaptor?

BTW you can remove the internal working parts from that stopcock. There is a big nut on the bulbous part. You can dismantle to free off, or often fit new innards from a new stopcock, preferably the same make. Take the new one apart first to see how it works. You have to support the body with a big wrench to prevent it twisting.

I would go with swapping just the head if the body itself is sound. That way you leave the poly adaptor underneath alone, which is the part most likely to give you trouble if it is disturbed after years in place. Just match the new head to the old BS1010 body, turn the water off in the road first, and open a tap to drain down before you start.

Cheers for the advice. Since you're based over in the States like me, do you reckon it's safer to just throw a standard 3/4" SharkBite push-fit on that blue poly pipe instead of risking the old adapter, or will the NPT threads on an American stopcock not play nice with the British BS1010 setup if I have to swap the whole body?

If in doubt, cut the fitting of at the top of the blue pipe and fit a new stopcock. You'll need a 25mm insert and a short piece of 15mm copper with a new 15mm elbow, https://www.screwfix.com/p/flomasta-poly-stop-cock-25mm-x-15mm/86048
