Stopping pipes from freezing

I have a washing machine in a garage, the recent cold weather has frozen the pipes. Has anyone tried this product or similar to stop thier pipes from freezing.

Its what I would refer to as a form of trace heating. You should get protection on your pipework wherever its in contact but the trouble with having washing machines in an otherwise unheated space is that the dregs of water in the pump will still expand when frozen and blow the pump apart.
