I put dw40 on window hinges and now it either swings right out or can hardly open anyway of making stay in one position?

WD40 wuldn`t cause this, look carefully at the hnges. loose or broken.

Don't they have adjusting screws in the slider of the friction stays

It's this screw, just adjusted it. Chatgpt said grubscrew, but this isn't grubscrew, is it?

It's a headless screw completely threaded along it’s whole length so I’d call it a grub screw.

I suppose it depends where you put the WD40. If you put it on the pins that connect the various metal strips together that should be fine. If you have put it on the friction slide that is going to convert it to a non-friction slide and the result is likely to be what you have got.

Yes that's the right screw, but I don't think you would have needed WD40. if you had given the frame a good clean.
