Bit of a garden project starting soon. Few borders, few planters etc

Daft question but how do you guys store excess soil whilst doing the work. Ie. I want to dig a long border and insert a planter so this will be refilled with the good soil. Was thinking either bags or a big sheet... It's quite stony so will be slowly sifting through getting rid of the rubbish before refilling planters.

Also need to remove a bit of turf... Can this be utilised in planted once turned into compost.

Just don't want to waste a load only to have to buy more.

How much soil?

You can scrounge or buy big one ton bags from deliveries

Anyway really, Usually just in a pile. Often when doing terracing type work you scrape off the decent top foot and put it aside before digging out subsoil. Then you can reuse the topsoil. The very act of digging it and moving it will improve the structure a bit.

Thanks. Never even thought of the bags even though will be ordering some gravel etc.

Will not be much soil at first but later I want to remove and replace a sleeper border so will need to empty soil in order to remove sleepers, replace with alternative and refill with soil. Also getting rid of another sleeper border on the rear garden so that can be used to fill front new planters.

Just a lot of transferring back and forth etc and sifting through the stones and old roots etc.

just make a pile - turn the turves upside down and the grass will die. I saved the cost of a skip and a lot of barrowing by creating a long mound - hardcore covered with subsoil and finished with topsoil- getting established with plants now.(y)
