I have a stoves gas oven which is not working properly. It usually lights first time but will not relight immediately if I have to turn the oven off before opening the door to check the dinner. It will usually relight if I leave it for 10 mins or so. The gas is coming through as I can smell it but there is no spark from the ignition. Is this likely to be an expensive or complex repair, the oven is around 17 years old.

Thank you

It's probably cheaper to buy a new one than invest money in to appliance of this age. But if you decide to repait it - make sure gas safe engineer will check it properly.

Almost any decent gas safe engineer who works on cookers should be able to rectify this fairly easily and imo it`s probably worth doing as most 17 year old cookers will be a damn sight better than some of the sh*te being sold nowadays.

Because there is a problem getting spares for cookers ( mostly just mail order ) if any parts are required then two visits would be needed. Anyone who charged properly would need say £100 at least.

Its possibly just a simple repair on one visit. If you live near someone who specialises in cookers then its probably worth a visit.

Most of us are registered for cookers but dont want to do many cooker repairs as they are not very worthwhile jobs ( apart from being very nasty groping round a smelly grease filled oven ) but cooker shops do often have engineers they can recommend.

Try to get a no fix- no fee arrangement if you can. You dont want to pay say, £50 just to be told its not worth repairing!

Its also probably Stoves have service agents. They are usually a minimum of £90 just to visit so do check the costs first.

Sorry but I seem to be missing something here.
Why do you turn the oven off before you open the door to see what's happening to your dinner.

Then if after doing that, as you say, if you turn it back on, gas is coming out but not sparking, sounds completely dangerous to me, as after 10mins it does spark

The gas fail safe must be checked surely!!!!!
