Despite having the boiler set to hot water only, yesterday some of the radiators came on.

The roomstat has no effect, although the relay switches over.

The timer (on the boiler) was in timed position, and turning it to off turned the heating off. However, putting it back to timed (with boiler still set to hot water only) led to some radiators coming back on again, regardless of whether it was in an on or off period.

The radiators that come on are dotted around the house, but bore no relation as to the TRV settings.

Boiler is a Halstead Ace High. (Had a problem a while back which required a diaphragm change). Pressure is unchanged at 1.5bar.

when it went before it affected the hot water, and kept switching on/off.

could the same diaphram give a different problem?

The Diaphragm only interacts with the Diverer Valve, they are two separate parts attached, sounds like the diverter valve is letting by possibly full of system crap, (thats techy talk for debris)

Diverer valve can be brought separatetly from the Diaphragm chamber
