Hi, I am trying to paint the dining room ceiling in my 1952 house and it's driving me mad! We removed the woodchip paper with no problems but underneath it the ceiling has been painted with what appears to be dark green gloss paint. I have tried to paint over this, but even after trialling 5 coats of matt emulsion the green comes through. I have tried Supercoat and PVA too just to see if that might work but no luck. As a last resort we have tried to scrape the paint off both with and without Nitromors but I think we'll still be chipping away til Christmas! I've never encountered paint like this before. Should I give up now and buy some ceiling paper or does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks!

How about 1970's polystyrene tiles!

The PVA can cause problems as many paints will not stick to it, so long as the green is not flaking off give it two coats of Zinsser 123 Bulls Eye primer, you may need to go to a trade outlet like Brewers to get it.
Then overcoat with two coats of emulsion any will do but a good one like Dulux Trade Matt will be even better.

P.S. I'm afraid Zinsser is pricey but it's a great product and should get you out of trouble no problem , it's never failed me yet!

Thanks, will try this and let you know what happens. I guess it could well be the adhesive from ceiling tiles, it's certainly something we've never encountered before, and we've done a lot of stuff in our time lol.

Hi thanks for the update.
It's worth mentioning that when using stain blockers like Zinsser to cover dark colours, it will deal with both colour bleeding through and staining the new paint, as well as just dark colours showing through the top coat.

If your problem is bleed through, don't worry if you still get some bleed through on the first coat because the product when dry will "lock" in the colour and the second coat will cover.

Thanks Footprints, I went to Brewers and got some Zinsser which worked a treat, so problem solved! :D
