So I went into the loft of my new house for the first time last night to see what the insulation was like.

In short it has about 10cm of v old looking rock wool.

It also seems as though someone has cut and fixed polystyrene bricks behind the tiles somehow (image below).

Question is, is this safe/standard practice or am I going to have to don the boiler suit and undo someones hard work?!

I would leave it in place, it must help, and it looks neat.

I can see pros and cons for leaving it in and taking it out...im out on that one.

But definitely reinsulate as normal on the loft floor.

Leave it in and add some extra insulation on the floor of the loft.

With the insulation as it is, although it will be helping, it is allowing the house below to heat the entire loft space as well before the insulation barrier.

I believe there should be an air gap between tiles and polystyrene.

Check with building control.

Make sure you put 11 ins of insulation between the joists. :D

Hi Noseall

Sorry should say 270 mm.

Love the job actually. have met some lovely people (And vile ones too) and signed up over 20 lofts for extra insulation.

Green Deal coming in next year will be where the good money to be earned is.

Best thing I did was go for this job. :D
