I have a ride on mower with trailer which I use to bring heavy materials to a new area of patio. I need to access the far end of the patio and I can choose between driving over a rough area and possibly puncturing the trailer tyres (they've been punctured 3 times by thorns in the last week); or I can loose lay the old patio slabs to provide a base for the mower/trailer, but would that break the slabs? I've got some old planks of wood, but no boards to put down.

It's not the strength of the slabs you need to worry about but how they are laid.
If there are any pressure points under the slabs, they will break. You won't compress the slabs with the vehicle if teh slabs are on a flat surface.
