Strengthen notched joists?

Hi,

I am about to remove an old cast iron gas pipe running under the upper floor of our 30s house. It's all been disconnected from the gas mains so I just need to take it out and can then fix the floor boards that we're bouncing on it.

Will I need to look at strengthening the joists due to the notch left by the pipe or is it likely to be ok?

Cheers
Stuart

That depends on;

the depth of the joists;
the depth of the notch;
whether the notch is on the top or underside;
the position of the notch along the span.

I ended up leaving the pipe in. There are notches for gas, water and cabling on those beams but they are pretty substantial beams (about 9" at a guess)
and it's been fine all this time so probably ok.
