Yeah, they do look very alike!
It does happen sometimes. Giugiaro designed both the Alfasud Sprint and the first generation VW Scirocco.
But as I say, these two cars don't share the same designer, unless I'm mistaken.

I find lots of cars look strikingly similar these days
Maybe the trouble with computer design. Put the same parameters in, get the same result out.
I always though the Insignia and Jag saloon of the same era (forget the model) looked very similar from side profile.
The silhouettes are very similar, this is the cars centre aligned.
You will probably find the shape of a lot of cars in the same segment these days is determined by CFD and Cd (Coefficient of Drag) targets.
Manufacturers will come up with nearly the same solution/shape to achieve the figures they need with only slight variations in design.
In terms of measurements there are more noticeable differences when comparing these models, the Volvo is on the right. Some of the figures are spec specific so not always totally accurate.
