Hi All

I've removed our MDF fireplace surround which has a wood veneer - it's stained in a mahogany colour. Anyway, we're in the process of decorating the room and my question is (before I attempt to do it) is it possible to remove the veneer woodstain with paint/varnish stripper and if so once it's done would a decent finish be achievable if it was then painted?

Thanks in advance

Is it real wood veneer? Or a melamine finish? If its wood just abrade lightly and give it a coat of zinsser 123, No need to strip, then a couple of coats of satinwood (?) depending on your mood. Used to do them in flat oil or oil eggshell in days gone by.

If it's melamine a coat of zinsser BIN shelac based http://www.zinsser.com/subcat.asp?categoryid=1 is a good base to work from on melamine.

Good luck
