Hi

We're looking to kill all of our grass and more importantly ivy and brambles. Actually, we're looking to kill everything as the garden is a tip and just needs destroying, it won't ever be planted on again.

Any ideas please?

Thanks :)

I've yet to find anything that will kill ivy. Even stump killer glyphosphate doesn't get through the surface of an ivy leaf. I've recently tried lacerating some ivy before spraying. The ivy looks a bit depressed but I don't think it is ready to die yet. I think digging out is the only answer.
Glyphospate seems to sort most other weeds eventually

Best way and only way we found to treat ivy is to cut it all back to the stump, then damage the stump with an axe or saw. Then pour stump killer on it. Even this takes a few times before it gives up. The waxy leaves stop most weedkillers working, so need to sort out the roots otherwise it will just keep growing. You could use sbk or Glyphospate, but I'd find one that is especially marketed as a tree stump killer.

I have found anything with 2,4-D and triclopyr effective on ivy.

When doing this sort of thing your best to raze the whole lot to the ground with brushcutters and then let it regrow for a few weeks and then spray.

I use a mix of roundup pro and broadshot

r896neo is it possible to buy broadshot retail? I think some of the more powerful stuff is only available to pros

SBK will kill scrub (but not grass). Glyphosate will kill grass and small stuff. After you have cleared it, anything that tries to resprout from the stump, cut it off and dab SBK or Glyphosate gel on the cut end. This even works on ivy if you cut the stems near the ground.

Are you sure about this? Your poor old garden may be 'a tip' but if you leave it as scorched earth it's going to be grim to look at and will devalue the property quite a bit...........
Rough cut grass and groundcover shrubs (like the ones the local council would use) will mostly look after themselves and be easy on the eye too.
Just a thought.

I've got a litre of para quart in the shed, that stuff will kill anything, or so I've read. I've heard people say diesel will kill ivy

It appears to be a glyphosate gel, so once diluted, it will surely be equally effective as other glyphosate mixtures.

Boiling salty water has always worked for me (though I've never tackled ivy) - then again, if your doing the whole garden that's a lot of kettles...
Recently seen claims that a gallon of vinegar with salt and liquid soap added will kill anything, but dont know anyone personally who has tried it (imagine it will leave your garden smelling like a chip shop!).
