Hi all,

We've had two separate deliveries of type 1 from different places and I'm worried about the qaulity of it.

The recent delivery, as in the white square, I'm concerned about the amount of dust to stone ratio. I know it needs dust to help bind but can there be too much fine dust? How does it look below? It's not particularly compacting well despite going over it 10+ times. What stones there was, we're quite large. Some around 10cm in size. It still has a very dusty top layer.

It feels solid to walk on but can be very easy loosened up by a little shuffle of a foot.

Ive under ordered again so got to get some more but how or where do I get decent type 1? Maidstone, Kent.

As you can probably tell, I've not compacted type 1 before. And the photo is probably absolutely fine and nothing to worry about.

Thanks!

There shouldn't be any stones >40mmin properly graded type 1. Your picture looks OK but type 1 compacts much better if damp.

Crushed concrete is another option.

The Type 1 in the white box is how it should be, 40mm down to dust. The area to the right of the box shows materials without enough fines in. It looks like a rake may have been used to level which has left the fines behind. A board rake or back of shovel should be used when levelling type 1 so as not to alter the distribution of fines. As previous post suggests, the product should be damp when compacting.
