Hello, Brand new to the forums and not carpenter, just a weekend DIY'er in need of some advice. Apologies, I'm mostly metric but can work with both.

I'm looking to fit a wooden loft ladder and hatch all in one, which is 1150mm by 540mm.

My current hatch is 534mm by 616mm, and i've just removed this and the nearby flooring to see what i need to do to make this work.

I expect i need to cut two joist, after drilling some 4" by 1" supports over the 5 joists on each side, but the joist size varies, and I don't know if this is needed structurally.

How do i find out?
Have attached picture of opening in my albulm, if this help, 1950's build house. View media item 26921 View media item 26922 [/img]
