Stud wall with acoustic insulation

Hello all!

I have volunteered to help my stepdaughter by building a new stud wall in her home. The proposed new stud wall is 2.245m wide by 2.352 high.

As her home is near Wickes I have chosen their 38x89x2400mm CLS stud timber they recommend for internal non-load bearing stud walls.

I feel it's important to use an acoustic insulation between the plasterboard but seem unable to find any at 89mm thickness.

Am I using the wrong timber size? has anyone done a similar wall?

Iain,
you can use either the 38x89x2400mm or the 38x63x2400mm studs. For my DIY i usually see what the thickness of the other walls are, and choose my CLS stud width so that all the walls look a similar thickness at the door.
Note that you should use 12.5mm thick plasterboard (never the 9mm) so your wall thickness will be 114mm or 88mm.

Acoustic insulation, is always a nightmare subject as it is subjective, and (for example) after spending a fortune on a wall the sound goes through the door, or along the joists, or etc etc. So any methods below are simply to slightly reduce the sound.

But I feel that filling the gap with loose insulation of some sort is always good at making the wall sound more solid and stopping a some noise. Normally I just use left-over rock wool or loft insulation, and as it is compressible (and being used for Acoustic insulation) then it matters less if it is 100mm thick and squashed to the 89mm inside the wall.

I have never used it, but I see wickes has "Earthwool Acoustic Roll 50mm 15.6m2" that seems suitable for your application to stop a bit of noise:

No, air is an insulator, as are the plasterboards.

BTW, 25mm is the requirement.
