Subsidise the Business.

To us on the outside it does indeed look like explotation but is it just relative?
It gives them the chance to buy luxuries like smokes, If the prisoners thought they were being exploited they wouldn't do it i'm sure.

You could put the same argument as to why it's OK to exploit workers in other countries...

Globalisation appears in many guises, but at it's root is getting the most for the least outlay - and exploit whoever you can, whatever their circumstances, and wherever they are...

Don't get me wrong ellal i'm not condoning it just making the point that people have choices, those in prison are not starving they do the work for extra luxuries as mentioned before.
The explotation comes when the people don't have the choice as in the third world where they fight to exist and therefore are at the mercy of those in the capatilist states.

If they could manage to organise themselves into unions to demand better wages as we did in this country at the turn of the 1900's things might be different, unfortunately can't see it happening in the near future and just as well for us living over here, think of the implications of harming the economy over here, not being able to afford a cup of coffee (joke).

Probably a little naive regarding any 'right to decline'... Hobson's choice..

...Here's what the prisoners themselves had to say, "I was made to pack cards into plastic slips but found this hard as have Attention Deficit Disorder. Because I could not keep up I ended up on basic regime, 23 hours a day bang up, 1/2 hour visits, £2.50 canteen a week, no association"........"I laid fabric for Wilkinson ironing boards but at the time had a medical issue so would loose a days wage each week as I had to see the doctor. Plus I would get docked if I could not complete an order. I was 300 miles away from home so had to do this work to phone my family"................... "At HMP Lindholme I saw inmates use the toilet and not wash their hands packing mushrooms, spit on them, put boggies on them, kick them about, put flies in the pack then seal them. Also the onions were kept in moldy conditions then wiped and sealed. I wrote to Asda but got no reply. The mushrooms packed for Asda I would not eat them as health and safety in prisons is not an issue"............" I have packed food for Asda, parts for Land Rover, packed welcome packs for hotels, nuts and bolts for DIY stores, plus have been punished for not working"........"I packed cards and put screws in shock kits. We are meant to be getting rehabilitated but we are used like slaves for pittance then we have to shop at Aramark to buy our stuff at over marked prices"...

If that's the case they may have a case for human rights as they are being discriminated against from their fellow prisoners, surprised that the European Court of Human Rights hasn't been put into action against this.
Some say prisoners don't have any rights but being locked up and confined for 23 hours isn't humane.

I remember at High School in cookery class, we were required to make sandwiches for parents evening that night. We got through loads of bogies

Some interesting prison stats ... from Hansard... So one imagines 'twill be near enough correct.
http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200607/cmhansrd/cm070416/text/70416w0106.htm

...If adhered to, the policies contained in Prison Service Orders and Standards which underpin Prison Rules, represent a good framework within which the prisons support the UK obligations under treaties such as the United Nations Convention against Torture and the European Convention on Human Rights...

See the final table...
...The following table shows the 2005-06 cost per prisoner for each prison establishment, broken down by function. This includes all young offender institutes (YOI)...
... Quite a costly job.

The 'Rules' subject to at least one amendment ...

yes, used to be three men in a 10' b 8' for 23hrs, if it rained, it was 24 hrs,
Put three dogs in that situation, the rspca wouldn't like it

Criminals finding life in prison unpleasant?!

Whatever next - police officers finding their job dangerous? Oil rig workers complaining that things are getting a little bit salty? Footballers waking up next to ugly and stupid wives?

Whatever is the world coming to - the government really should do something about it!
