Previous owners have filled in old pipe holes and other repairs in my walls with cement. They've disguised the cement a bit to make the fillings look brick shaped and even made some 'lets pretend' mortar joints.

Any ideas how I can colour the brick shapes to make them look more like bricks? House is 1902 vintage and bricks are quite orange in colour.

I want to "tint" the surface texture, not actually paint over the surface.

You can get cement dyes which you either add to a mix or apply afterwards. They do tend to fade quite quickly though.

If you can lay your hands on any old bricks you could try breaking them up into dust and applying that to the surface of the mortar. I've had limited success matching up some small areas on a garden wall but the bricks were fairly dark, I don't know how it would work with bright orange.
