Next week I'll finally start working on strengthening our floor joists suspended timber floor.

I have a few questions though and would be grateful for some input:

2) One particular joist is a little spongy at the bottom (about 2 cm). I think this was caused many years ago. Would it be o.k to leave it and simply strengthen with 4 x 2 timber or would it be better to repair and replace?

1) Our existing joists are 100 cm x 50 cm. Timber available these days seem to be 95 x 45 cm. If I were to replace a section how would I make up the missing 5 mm. Would wood shims on the wall plates work or is there a better way?

Thanks

You could treat the wet/damp timber and ensure the source is addressed too.

The new joist would sit on the opening in the wall flush with the existing joist with the height made up across the top with hardwood stripping, or even a thick underlay.

Blup
