My PC currently has 7 instances of svchost running in processes, 4 in System, 2 in Network Service and 1 in Local Service. One of the System ones occasionally starts to run up and take all the CPU resource, probably for about 5mins but the PC becomes unusable during this time. The only programs I had open this time were Explorer7 and Media Player 11. I use Win XP home. Any way of telling what this instance of svchost is doing in this time?

I've heard of some problems with WMP11.

here's some details for getting svchost information.

Cheers, might try reverting back to WMP10 and see if that works. My PC doesn't recognise the Tasklist command, I have XP home if this makes a difference? The other thing is I keep my music files on a network drive, wether this will make a difference or not?

Thanks for that, have just installed it. Will have a play about tomorrow, also when it decides to play up again.
Cheers

Are they all definitley svchost.exe ? Some malware disguises itself by subtle changes in spelling such as scvchost.exe. The location of these is also important. If you think anything might be suspicious check it here..

Not 100% sure, I have up to date McAfee viruskiller/firewall installed if that will pick them up.
