Is it acceptable to install switches and sockets at the same height as the originals (1930's house) in a 3 room new build extension ?
Or do they have to conform to the 450mm & 1200mm height as in a complete new build ?

No it's not necessary if you don't want to do that.
It only applies to new build and complete rewire AFAIK.

Make sure the Council are OK with them being the same height as existing.

Shouldn't be a problem since the new heights are for full new builds, but the Council do have a habit of getting 'antsy' about things- so run it past them 1st.

With a rewire I believe the requirement is if it didn't comply before it must not end up any less compliant.

you may find it an advantage to user the higher position for sockets. it is easier for people who are old/stiff/fat/pregnant/have bad backs or knees

or any combination.
