The UK does allow many dangerous items to be sold. There is no routine market surveillance of product safety, and Trading Standards do not have the resources to follow up many complaints.
And for products bought from China on Amazon or eBay there's nobody in the jurisdiction of our laws and agencies to go after anyway.

From the 1950s though to the 1970s, "made in Japan" was synonymous with cheap tat. A generation later it was anything but. I wonder if China will follow the same path?
