Does anyone know of a site that cross-references struts/dimensions to vehicles ? I want some for my Vectra and would prefer to get from a scrapper, however no Vectras in stock. Ideally therefore I would like to find a list of vehicles taking the same dimensions, although I am unsure to what extent struts are individually designed for weight of tailgate: if very tailored that may kill my idea.

Other question: how do you compress these struts to fit them ? I tried compressing a strut I removed and the effort required was very great, so unsure how you can do that whilst manoeuvring into position.

Thanks in advance

You fit them, with the item you are fitting it to, full open/extended. Struts are specified by the unextended length, extended length, and their pressure Newtons.

There should be plenty options to get the correct parts.
Maybe the part/ref number will be printed on them to get x refs.

Nothing wrong with aftermarket items, but you get what you pay for .. guess how I know (& my boot-lid is lighter than a hatch)

I bought some non genuine ones for a Megane once, about a month later one of them failed and the glass shattered when the boot slammed shut, I bought genuine ones after that.

The 'cups' on the first ones I bought off the 'Bay wouldn't even clip over the body mountings, so they were returned for full refund.

Thanks, but I really was trying to re-use components. When I was on holiday in \Germany last summer I visited at least one scrapper trying to get these bits.
Risky approach in IMO
Not until you fit the used struts to the car will you know if they will support the weight of the tailgate, or even if they do how long for?
