taking out a socket

i want to remove a socket in my kitchen . there are two sets of wires going to the socket terminals can i just join both sets of wires together and fit a blanking plate
 
Yes. Join the wires together with crimps or choc-blocks. Make sure you leave the pattress earthed though if it's metal.
