I have a very tall pine with the trunk about 3 inches from a shed roof overhang. In yesterdays fearsome winds it has rubbed on the felt side, scraping it off about 3 inches by 1 inch.
I realize this was an unusual wind but, to stop in future, should I:
Shave a piece out of the tree trunk or
Cut a small piece from the roof edge (felt roof) and re-seal.
The tree is about 30 feet high and I would be loathe to fell it.

I would do both. Shave the tree trunk and cut the roof edge back. That should double the clearance.

As long as you don't ring the bark all the way round the tree or cut too deep it will be fine.
