Tanking

2 fish in a tank, one says to the other "do you know how to drive this?"

Serioulsy though, I have just been reading a specialist website about basement tanking.

They were saying the best idea is to have like an "umbrella" if you will (shaped to the wall obviously) so the water runs down behind it and into "guttering" which then leads to a sump, the sump has a pump fitted to pump to waste.

They were also saying most underground tanking fails because it usulay something like water proof cement on a wall, but the problem with this is the water pressure build up and cracks the cement, chipping out the cement and refilling is of little use because the water pressure is still there.

So my question is, is it all true?, facinating that it was.

The site has nothing to do with me, it just seemed plauseable, and interesting.

Yes, but only in extreme conditions, I prefer a bitumen coating in normal conditions. i.e. just a bit of damp no pressure, then render over the top with waterproofer in for a belt n braces job.

I have a relative who works for a co. installing this and other remedials.........wall ties...........etc. and damp course injection  It`s marvellous stuff........... ;)

Tanking to prevent damp penetration is a bit different to flood water table penetration.
Damp usually does not apply much pressure and is not too viscous where as flood/storm water is and needs to be drained away in an effecient manner.
