Tapping Walls

If you get that hollow sound when you tap the plaster on a brick wall does it mean you need to think about stripping back to the brick and starting again.

Quite a few of our walls are like this, but they do look nice still - painted and not papered.

We do have some cracks in the walls and these have been filled in the past.

house 100yrs old.

If they tap hollow it does normally mean the plaster is starting to fail, but if it is of no great concern and you are not going to start drilling in to them or knocking them about, they should hold for a little while longer.

Although the house is 100 yrs old that does not mean the plastered walls are, if any dry lining work has been carried out, don't rule out the walls being dot'n'dab, these can sound hollow. But nothing wrong with them!

agree, if they look fine then leave them, when it fails to the point of causing cracks then consider getting it sorted, as to whether it's the skim coat or the whole lot (float & skim) that's blown i couldn't say but it's usually easy to tell.

Skim shouldn't be blown on plasterboard, would only be blown when on top of some other plaster, PBD is right that boards sound hollow, this is a different type of hollow sound again though.
