Just moved into rented flat but completely puzzled by the water heating, perhaps someone can put me right.

The place has a Tempest water tank and two immersion heaters, one wired into something called O/P Immersion and the other wired into something called N/T Immersion. No one seems to know what they mean or what I have to do to maintain a good supply of hot water without running up horrendous electricity bills.

Is there anything I can do, DIY like, to make changes?

O/P = off peak
N/T = normal tariff

perhaps?

The idea being that off-peak electricity (midnight - 7am approx; but varies from one supplier to another) is cheaper - so you heat your water during the night using cheaper leccy.

Check that your supply is on Economy 7 tariff - your electricity bill should help.

Robin,

Thats very helpful, and so obvious, why didnt I think of that??

This sends me off on another route, as you say, do i have economy 7? Why dont land lords tell you anything, i now realise I dont even have a key for the meter cupboard so cant get the meter serial number or anything.

Presumably that means there is no DIY i can do.

Thanks again.

As said Ian, just ensure all your water is heated on cheap tariff leccy overnight & only boost it if you run out of hot water on normal tariff.
