Rodders - let me muddy the waters a bit. Freddy is quite correct with his definition when answering your question: what does "Going 1.8m" mean relative to a description of a staircase. The correct expression is 'the going of the flight is the horizontal distance between the faces of the top and bottom risers'. Confusion is created by the description of the 'horizontal distance from the face of one riser to that of the next' - yes, you've guessed it's called the 'going'.

So we have 2 expressions:

'going of the flight'

and

'going'.

I might do a 'sticky' with some definitions.
