Lived in the same house from new for 18 years now. Never had any problems except the occasional trip when a bulb blows. Is it now approaching the time to have it all tested and under normal circumstances what is the lifespan of pvc cable?

Domestic installations should be tested on change of occupant and at intervals no greater than 10 years. Just because it works, doesn't mean it's safe.

In the many PVC cable can last for many years. However where it is overloaded the live is reduced and one of the tests is to ensure the ring main is intact so there is no overloading.

Screws can become lose and although not every socket is removed the meters do test the impedance (resistance) and as such tend to highlight bad connections.

Will the electrician have to remove a socket in each room or will select at random sockets that have easy access?

Ok that seems straightforward enough. What is the best route to go down to find a good electrician to carry out the testing?

Holmslaw, took your advice and got a few good recommendations for a local company. Testing booked for next Tuesday. £100 plus vat, which seems reasonable.
