After 30+ years as a software engineer and keen DIY-er, I'm semi-retired and looking for something to do.

ChatGPT suggested an Android app... it suggested "a professional-grade calculation and validation app for people who work in the physical world.

Examples:
  • Electricians (load, voltage drop, conduit fill)
  • Plumbers (flow, pressure, pipe sizing)
  • HVAC techs (BTU, airflow, duct sizing)
  • Solar installers (panel strings, inverter limits)"

Sounds bloody perfect! But what?? What do people actually need? Or want? What would you pay for? That hasn't been done already. Or has been done badly.

Over to you - what do you struggle with where you're thought "There should be an app for this!"

That's where my last app came from - it was something I needed help with and thought an app would be just the thing. But it was extremely niche, providing help for charity workers. So there was no paid version.

If I launch an app as a result of a suggestion, I'll give the suggester full credit and free use of all versions for life.

No, I won't be producing an iOS version. But maybe a desktop version if there was demand.

If there was one It would be good for it to plan based on room dimensions shower type, then provide optimal pipe runs for plumbing concealed showers and if possible come in install it all and guarantee the work for 25 years then brilliant.

Maybe the first bit could be easily done.

I sorely miss the Last Orders app.

It used to show me the opening and closing times of all pubs in the area (London).

I did speak to one of the developers, he told me that he was hoping that the likes of Heineken would eventually buy the app.

I guess that they ran out of money during covid.

Not sure that punters would be willing to pay for such an app, pubs might though.

I once thought, I know what - I'd like to write an app, not too hard to learn etc.
I wanted one to wake me up when on a train and I got near my destination station.

Unfortunately when I looked in the app store there were already about 19 others that do this.
So I gave up that idea lol.

Currently I'd like an app that I could enter the dimensions of legrand cable trunking (or just pick the size) and the size of wire I am using to then calculate how many wires I can fit in it to be within the required standards. Currently all I ever see is American apps that use different values for the wire sizes - I'd like to add my own wire sizes (diameter etc.)

Mind you, it's such a small thing I'd like it for free :)

Back in the days when Nokia were still king (late 90's). I set the alarm on my phone to wake me up just after I had missed my stop (l was drunk). I slept through the alarm anyway and woke up 30 miles from home on the last train. My journey should have been 12 miles. My drunkenness added 60 miles to the 12 mile journey.
