What Nigel Farage says is incompatible with the Reform Party manifesto policies in massive cuts to the state.

“Reform UK proposes tax cuts that it estimates would cost nearly £90bn per year, and spending increases of £50bn per year. It claims that it would pay for these through £150bn per year of reductions in other spending, covering public services, debt interest and working-age benefits.

This would represent a big cut to the size of the state. Regardless of the pros and cons of shrinking the state, or of any of their specific measures, the package as a whole is problematic”

I'm disappointed that Farage has said this, although I can understand why he has.
The NHS (for some reason) is viewed as some kind of deity by vast swathes of the voting population. Any hint of reform is met with gasps of horror even though they can see that it (NHS) has become an absolute shambles of inefficiency.
I believe the main reason for this recoiling lies with the fact that they have been convinced that there is only two types of health service.
It's either the wasteful behemoth of inadequate incompetence we have here, or the opulence of greed like in the US.

I'm disappointed that Farage has said this, although I can understand why he has.
The NHS (for some reason) is viewed as some kind of deity by vast swathes of the voting population. Any hint of reform is met with gasps of horror even though they can see that it (NHS) has become an absolute shambles of inefficiency.
I believe the main reason for this recoiling lies with the fact that they have been convinced that there is only two types of health service.
It's either the wasteful behemoth of inadequate incompetence we have here, or the opulence of greed like in the US.

The NHS needs restructuring imho. I am against privatising it however but you are right I think, the argument put forward is always a black and white one.

Where is your evidence the NHS is “an absolute shambles of in efficiency”

The spend per capita is quite similar to most European health services.

Back in 2010 outcomes and waiting lists were quite good and it stood up well by comparison. but there’s been 14 years of no infrastructure capital investment

We’ve seen huge cuts on social services, mental health services, criminal justice system, care of the elderly and big cuts to GP surgeries and number of Gps……..all of which have pushed more and more people resorting to use A&E.

The breakdown of community care for the elderly and lack of affordable care has led the NHS stuffed full of the very frail and elderly often with dementia

Add on the increase in people’s poor health with huge rise in diabetes……


Claiming that the NHS is failing only because it’s inefficient, is not helpful.

I agree that the NHS needs reform, but inefficiency is far from the only issue that needs dealing with

When Labour reorganised the NHS in the early 2000s we had the chance to move to a system more like France. That is what I wanted. But the consultation was just a fig leaf for maintaining the status quo.

Culture wars are a key strategy of right wing populism.

It’s not hard too see the inflammatory language and the headlines…..it almost all comes from the right.

If you want we can go through all the culture war campaigns pushed by the Conservatives, Reform, Trump etc and compare it to the left.
