The naked scanner.

I was just thinking about the people most likely to try to blow up planes, to disguise themselves as the sort of person who is not likely to try to blow up a plane, in order to avoid the scanner.
But then, if they were wearing a burka, how would you know if they'd disguised themselves?

Because they'd be the one wearing the Burka.

yeah, and someone copied that with a concorde and got away with it.. they blamed a bit of the shrapnel off the plane...

is there radiation involved? what about frequent flyers such as businessmen/women, would they accumulate a harmful dosage?

Not ionising radiation, for certain. The sensors work in the millimetric band, basically very longwave light (or very shortwave radio!). These things can be built entirely passive, but I believe the ones they're bringing out in airports are active.

As one who has worked with such sensors, I can tell you that you can see through all sorts of stuff, even breezeblock walls.

The energy required even for the active systems would be relatively low, and for short time periods. So, even if they do later find a risk, the exposure is miniscule in comparison to the exposure to radio waves you'll receive queueing up in the airport (from mobile phones, walkie talkies, wi-fi hotspots etc).

You always know someone will spoil it with an intelligent post

how stupid can some people be?
the screens will be in a secure room with an operator..
said operator should not be allowed any items such as cameras or mobile phones etc for storing the pictures..
the pictures won't be stored on a hard drive anywhere as once cleared then there is no reason to maintain a copy of the image..

if they want indecent pictures of kids then they go to the beaches and get pictures there..
no one complains about parents taking pictures of their kids playing in the sand in a bikini etc..
