How do I used a multimeter

1. When there is a earth leakage, what will show on the Multimeter? Which range should i used amps, ohms or voltages? Where should i put the red and the black tips of the multimeter? what should i do if there is a earth leakage?

2. When there is a short circuit, what will show on the Multimeter?Which range should i used amps, ohms or voltages? Where should i put the red and the black tips of the multimeter? what should i do if there is a Short circuit?

3. Besides this 2, in what circumstances will i need to used a multimeter?

thks u 4 your reply!

1. Not sure what you mean, you could use a multimeter to check for continuity (ohms) between live and earth if you suspect earth leakage but it most likely wouldnt show anything unless there is a short circuit. You would need an insulation resistance tester to check the condition of the insulation of the circuit.

2. Short circuits can be measured using the ohms range and will show as a low reading, same as testing a fuse.

3. testing a fuse, testing for live wires etc...

where the probe tips go depends entirely on what you are testing for. If you are testing for a short circuit or a fuse them the probes go either side of whatever is under test. When testing for a voltage then the probes would go between "live" and either neutral or earth (but always ensure that even if the multimeter shows no voltage you turn off the electric supply before touching any wires).

Hope this helps, if you can give specific situations where you need to use your multimeter then perhaps you could get a more specific response.

I whole heartedly concur with the previous post,
I would like to suggest that the person trys "testing things" like batteries, lamps etc to get familiar with a multi meter, leave the mains cables well alone, also as mentioned to check for earth leakage an insulation resisatnce tester is required these are not cheap and ARE dangerous if used in the wrong hands.

remember this "electricity has no predjudices, it kills anyone"

i think he,s bought his wife one for christmas,do you really want to know what to do with the red & black tips.
