The plasterer I use, has a container of "old" plaster, which goes of very quickly. So he mixes some up fills any deep holes and puts his tape on with it. The tape he used is a glass fibre net that is sticky. By the time he has finished and mixed up his first real plaster mix, the "old" stuff has gone off so he just carries on.
