is it possible to use a universal thermocouple on a baxi solo, and if so, how - it protrudes from the front of the boiler!

Changing a thermocouple is really a job for a Corgi reg. engineer. I definitely would not recommend using anything other than the correct spare part, unless you are really sure of what you are doing (which you obviously aren't).
