Hi,

We've bought a new house which has a hot water tank and a digital thermostat. The CH and HW timings of when they come on and off can be set individually. At the moment I've the HW coming on for a couple of hours in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening...

This seems to work fine, but am I'm leaving it on too long? Do I really need it on for four hours a day? There are 2 adults and 1 toddler in our house, or does this sound about right?

Thank you in advance

Ben

It may be timed to be on for 4 hours, but the boiler wont fire to heat the water unless its required to do so.

Is there a thermostat strapped to the hot water cylinder, about 2/3rds of the way down? This should be set to about 60C, the system will only fire up to heat the water in the cylinder when this stat requires it to.

Hi,

Thank you for reply. Just looked. There is a Drayton CS-4 thermostat with numbers 1-8 I believe. Its currently set to 4. No temperatures as such.

So does this mean even though HW is set for 4 hours a day, that the back boiler will only fire to heat the water if it reaches level 4 or below? (what ever level 4 is)?

Thanks

Doesn't sound too long. Don't forget that the HW temperature is controlled by a thermostat. So the boiler or immersion heater is only running when the water in the cylinder has cooled down due to the replacement of hot water by cold, which is usually about 10C below the set temperature. So the water may only be heating up for half an hour out of the two, depending on how much has been drawn off.

The important thing is that you have hot water when you need it. Experiment with times and see what works best.

Does your HW cylinder have the permanent foam insulation or the loose jacket. The foam are much better and retain the heat for several hours.

Basically yes! Once the temp of the water falls below that set on the stat, then the stat will call for heat and system should fire to heat the water. When stat becomes satisfied (water up to set temp) then system will switch off again.
