Hi,

This has been discussed previously, but very briefly (... bit of a novice, could do with some more detail ). I have an old and apparently disused dial thermostat in the flat I have just moved into ...

... I'm wanting to put a bookcase in its current location and hence need to remove it. Could someone guide me as to a safe way to do this.

Cheers

Grant

Well, it may seem an easy question but to do it properly would mean running a cable to the new position but that would mean connecting the cable by a satisfactory method so that it remains safe.

The best way would be to buy a remote thermostat and disconnect the existing wire altogether.

Many thanks for your swift response EFL,

I should have been clearer: there is already a new, functioning thermostat in place elsewhere … I just need to, as you say, disconnect and remove this one. This is where I could use some guidance. Is this relatively straightforward?

You need to find the other end of the cable - usually a wiring box near the boiler or in the boiler itself.

Presuming it is not practical to remove the cable.
Disconnect it and connect the three wires, L, N & E, together in a terminal block.
Do the same at the thermostat position and either plaster in or fit a blank cover.

Hi again EFL,

Ok … that does seem relatively straightforward: the bit I'm most struggling with is how to locate and more importantly confirm the other ends of the cables. I'm assuming that as the thermostat has been replaced, the ends of the old cables may not be visible, accessible etc. if they are how would I recognise them … and how would I confirm that they definitely are the ends of the old cables :?

Thanks again EFL

You will need a multimeter.

If there is a cable loose somewhere:
Switch off ALL power and check for dead.
Connect together the three wires.
Check that there is NO continuity between these three and any other connections - Ls, Ns or Es.
At the thermostat position check that there IS continuity between the three wires.

Apologies EFL … I'm quite a novice at this, could you explain what you mean by this in a little more detail.

Also, I can't see any loose wires anywhere (… I suppose it is possible that an older boiler may have been located elsewhere?)

Thanks in advance EFL

G.

Well, unless you can find the other end I don't think there is anything I can tell you without there being some danger.

Previous people could have done anything.

I think you may have to get someone to look at it.

Many thanks for your time EFL. A final question: the only way to find the other end is to check around the existing boiler?

Thanks again

G.

The "other end" would have been terminated in a wiring centre, or in teh programmer. There's no telling that this is where the wiring centre is located now, of course. It may have been moved.

Hi Taylor,

Thanks so much for weighing in. It does look as if
I'll have to get an electrician in - given the situation
how could they find it?
